In February 2000 RISCOS Ltd asked RISC OS users to let us know what printers they were using (and/or would like to use) so that the development team could ensure that development of the printing system was being channelled into areas needed by the community.

Comments:Doesn't drive to 1200x600 (only to 600x600).
Model:HL-1060
PDF:HP.LJ.LasJet-5
Comments:No 1200dpi support in driver but I can't tell the difference
between windows 1200dpi and RISC OS 600dpi on printouts. Lots of other
Brother models have the same or similar engines and should work fine.
Some older ones are PCL4 instead.

Model:BR-Script 2 board + HL-660
PDF:Postscript level 2
Comments: Seems to hang occasionally - not fully investigated - gives a
printed error page. Printer has 6MB internal RAM but the
'hanging' may be related to lack of memory due to font
interpretation from Ovation Pro documents. Soon to be upgraded
to the max addressable 10MB.

Halftones a little too fine, but less of a problem because we don't photocopy the output.

Comments:If the printer is set to colour print, it is slow, even on black and white lines.
To get speed one must set to B&W. However, in Windoze printing, a mixed B&W and colour
document prints fast on B&W lines but slows on lines containing colour, but not as slow as
the Acorn driver. With !Printers v1.62 on RISC OS 4 all 6 modes work correctly despite some reports
that the 720 dpi non-microweave and the 1440 dpi modes are broken.

Comments:Print Quality is mediocre thanks to HP's policy to not reveal anything. For good printouts
I use PostScript (Apple LW II NTX - see below) to file, make it PDF with GhostScript and then print
in in Windows 98 with Acrobat Reader 4.0. Good results are achieved this way. (BTW: I didn't buy the
printer but got from the company I work at for the odd home office job.)

Status:Offered to ExpLAN for further development
Comments:Drives to a maximum 600dpi, does not support the built in Duplexer or PhotoRealistic
printing capability. This printer has auto cartridge alignment so a separate toolbox type app is
not required unlike most other recent inkjets. With my RISC OS 3.7, Printers 1.54 system the printer
requires waking up before printing is possible from RISC OS, this is done with a small app which
just sends a reset. This may not be necessary with later versions of RISC OS/Printers.
Could be made public if ExpLAN decide not to develop further?
